Liner Notes:

Music from Dixie

The magic behind dixieland music lies mainly in the fact that it is quite a bit more than just music. Dixieland is a spirit; an unfettered, wonderfully undisciplined wail of pure happiness. Dixieland - both musically and emotionally - is the embodiment of simplicity.

In essence, dixieland music can neither be contrived or premeditated, for it is from its spontaneity, from its inventive improvisation, that it derives its life.

Pete Fountain, whose clarinet has become one of dixieland music's most eloquent spokes-men, was born to his unique craft and raised on it. Pete has the spirit and imagination built in. This, coupled with his extraordinary mastery of his instrument, has made of him the personification of dixieland jazz.

In this album, Pete's artistry stands out in bold relief against a colorful background provided by top jazz instrumentalists Stan Wrightsman, Morty Corb, Jack Sperling, Eddie Miller, Moe Schneider, Bobby Gibbons and Charles Teagarden.

Pete Fountain at his peak. Standout tracks are: 'I Wish I Could Shimmy Like My Sister Kate' and 'Song Of The Wanderer'. IMO this take of 'Song of the Wanderer' is Pete's best-ever solo: superb clarinet technique coupled with effortless, free-ranging improvising. If you're a clarinet player you'll love it.
Unfortunately this album has never been re-issued on CD in its entirety. Treat the vinyl like it was gold...
